Graduate Degree Programs
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The Department of Geology & Geophysics offers a research-driven PhD degree. A PhD student is expected to propose and defend original research that contributes to the understanding of geosciences. Your research advisor and graduate advisor committee will guide you through the PhD program and help you achieve your career goals.
PhD geoscientists are individuals who want to conduct research for industry or government research centers or who seek careers in academic institutions. Currently, PhD students from G&G are gaining employment as post-doctoral fellows in academic institutions and in industry research laboratories.
Admission to the LSU Graduate School and to the Department of Geology & Geophysics is required.
Master of Science
The Department of Geology & Geophysics offers a 30-credit-hour MS degree that requires an independent research project (thesis). The thesis is driven by scientific curiosity and completed with guidance from the primary faculty member and the thesis committee. Coursework is tailored to prepare students to complete the thesis, enhance communication skills, and broaden their knowledge of the geosciences.
Ideally, students complete an MS degree in two academic years. Industries (environmental, data analysis, and oil & gas) consider the MS – Geology degree the “working degree”. The strength of the independent thesis, the development of communication skills, and the breadth of knowledge acquired as you progress through the MS degree prepare you for your chosen career.
Admission to the LSU Graduate School and to the Department of Geology & Geophysics is required.
Applied Depositional Geosystems Graduate Certificate
The Graduate Certificate in Applied Depositional Geosystems (ADG) trains both traditional (those with BS degrees in geosciences) and non-traditional students (those with Bachelor's degrees in other science and engineering fields) for career opportunities in the energy industry, government agencies, and academia. Providing students with training in this field enhances their skills in geology, mathematics, and the physical sciences, forming a basis for work in petroleum and water exploration, as well as environmental geology and engineering. The Graduate Certificate in Applied Depositional Geosystems will be awarded to students who successfully complete five courses (15 hours) tailored to their career goals, selected from a specified list. No course substitutions or transfer credit is permitted.
